I am an IT security administrator and have been working in the industry for over 10 years. I have worked with both Windows and Linux systems, but with a primary focus on Windows desktop support and security.
I have witnessed many viruses over the years, and more recently the increase of spyware and adware. The dangers of spyware are far more serious than all the viruses I have dealt with. With spyware, trojans, hacker tools etc, users are put at a much more serious risk than they probably ever imagine.
In particular I have witnessed first hand two users that have had their internet banking details stolen and used for illegal purposes. Luckily in both cases the bank was able to retrieve the funds back, but most are not so lucky.
Virtually every computer I have ever come across in the past 3 years has been infected with some sort of spyware or adware. In fact, I now remove spyware/adware full time and I can tell you there is no shortage of work.
Please take a moment to understand how serious a threat you are facing if your machine is infected with some kind of parasites. If you are infected, you need to assume that every bit of data on your computer is exposed, as well as every transaction you make. Would you like it if people had all of that info?
I don't want to scare anyone, just want to let them know that this problem is real, but it can be dealt with quite easily.
